Do trzech czwartych ataków na imigrantów doszło poza ich miejscem zamieszkania, ale prawie 1000 miało miejsce w domach ofiar. Decyzja kanclerz Angeli Merkel o otwarciu niemieckich granic dla osób uciekających przed konfliktem w Syrii i innych krajach, doprowadziła do wzrostu przestępstw z nienawiści, mimo że liczba osób ubiegających się o azyl w Niemczech spadła z ponad 600.000 w 2015 do 280.000. w 2016 roku.
