Yesterday the Polish Parliament discussed a draft law ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on combating violence against women (the Istanbul Convention). The matter of ratification sparked a highly polarized debate, with some arguing that the convention might not be compatible with the Constitution and that it would endanger Polish traditions and family values. The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights believes the convention "conforms to the Polish Constitution and its ratification would help in effectively preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence."
