Irish politicians have voted to end the constitutional restriction on abortion and allow the procedure up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy. Following their vote, members of parliament sitting on the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment urged repeal of the hugely divisive Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution, which bans abortion, and called for new laws be introduced to decriminalise abortions in some cases. The hope now is that the public will vote for the reform in a referendum next May.
