Our Human Rights Day Gift? More Wins on Causes You Care For

Grow your skills with our new guide on human rights messaging. The booklet is now available in e-learning format on Liberties' brand new knowledge hub.

by Israel Butler

Across the EU, campaigners are helping people use their rights to get the things we all need to thrive. Whether it’s stopping us going backwards on a woman’s right to choose or moving us forward by better protecting activists and journalists from attempts by corporations and crooked politicians to gag them.

But it can be hard for activists to build the public support we need to make positive social change. Human rights can come across as abstract, complicated and irrelevant to the daily lives of most people. And our opponents have become very good turning the public against campaigners and the issues we work on.

We worked with 120 activists this year

That’s why Liberties is supporting groups campaigning on human rights-related causes to communicate more persuasively. Up to now we’ve done this by writing messaging guides, running training sessions and working with organisations on their campaigns. This year we worked with over 120 activists campaigning on issues including climate justice, migration, press freedom, the rule of law and facial recognition.

Today we’re adding a new tool: on demand e-learning. We’re releasing our first training module for activists to follow when and where it suits them through our new Knowledge Hub.

Messaging guide available now in e-learning format

Our first module, ‘How to message on human rights’, is an introduction to the basic rules of persuasive messaging. We outline some of the most common messaging mistakes, explain why they don’t work and set out what to do instead.

If you’re interested in supercharging your communications, you can follow the module for free by registering through our knowledge hub. And don’t forget to download the messaging guide that accompanies the module for heaps of extra tips, including guidance on how to develop messages for social media along with examples of images and videos to inspire you.

Next year we’ll be bringing you more training modules to help rights groups boost their communications as well as their capabilities in litigation.
