The condemnation of Belgium by the European Court of Human Rights is a reminder that the fight against overcrowding in its prisons, aside from being obvious, has now reached a critical level and needs urgent action. Will Belgium finally take measures against the conditions in its prisons, and against the bad public image these conditions create for the country? Will the government actually fulfill its stated commitment to establishing a new policy for its prison system?
