Le pratiche di codifica della aziende che gestiscono app di chat sono inadeguate, secondo Amnesty International, che ha classificato le aziende sulla base dei metodi per crittografare, compresa la crittografia end-to-end, le politiche sulla privacy, la condivisione di informazioni. Tra le varie aziende, Facebook, Apple e Telegram hanno preso da uno a tre punti, mentre Snapchat, BlackBerry e Tencent sono le più basse in classifica. In particolare, solo 5 applicazioni adottano una crittografia end-to-end come predefinita: iMessage di Apple, WhatsApp di Facebook, Duo di Google, LINE e Viber.
