Florin Iordache, the deputy speaker from the ruling Social Democrat Party in Romania literally showed his middle finger in reaction to the European Commission’s request to immediately suspend ongoing judicial reforms. Brussels fears these reforms resemble the same kind of political meddling in the judiciary seen in Hungary and Poland, both currently under EU sanction procedures. Iordache stated that the “EU's absurd requests made by some unknown experts would block the whole Romanian justice system” by forcing the government to abrogate new laws on appointments of judges and prosecutors.
