Sweeping new legislation to fight terrorism is being pushed forward by the EU, but human rights advocates warn that the new powers could limit rights and be abused by unscrupulous state authorities. While the final text of the new EU directive to combat terrorism is not known, it is known from a leak of the draft text that the proposal aims at criminalizing terrorist related offenses linked to travel and training. Especially troubling to human rights defenders is its broad definition of terrorism, which they say could be interpreted to include left-wing protests and animal rights activism.
