Priests in Italy have vowed to open the doors of their churches for refugees who have been evicted from immigration centres. Earlier this month, the Italian parliament approved the so-called Salvini decree, which removes humanitarian protection for asylum-seekers who are not eligible for refugee status, leaving hundreds in legal limbo. When the decree came into effect, many asylum-seekers were made homeless after being expelled from so-called “welcome centres”. One bishop said that Italian churches will open their doors to refugees because “abandoning men, women and children is now the law”.
