Minister Ard van der Steur and State Secretary for Security and Justice Klaas Dijkhoff want to raise the prison sentence for human traffickers in order to deal more firmly with human trafficking. The maximum penalty will be raised from four to six years. For those in public office or exercising a profession who are guilty of trafficking, the prison sentence will be raised to a maximum of eight years. The sentence will be ten years for professional activity or organized crime. In the event of serious injury or death, criminals may spend up to 15 to 18 years behind bars.
