EU Values Are Weak in Hungary

Fundamental EU values, such as democracy and respect for human rights, are scarcely implemented in Hungary. Four NGOs have summarized the most important governmental and legislative measures introduced since 2010 that run counter to EU principles.

by Hungarian Civil Liberties Union

The European Union, which Hungary joined 10 years ago, "is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities." (Article 2, Treaty on European Union.)

The summary prepared by the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Eötvös Károly Institute and Mérték Media Monitor presents the lack of respect for European values by focusing on the principles of the rule of law, democracy, pluralism and respect for human rights. You can access the analysis in English here (pdf).

An additional 18 NGOs have joined in support of the statements made in the report.
