Ten NGOs are urging the European Parliament in an open letter to oppose Commissioner Günter Oettinger’s appointment as the EC’s head of human resources. They cite a series of sexist, racist and homophobic remarks he made, making him unfit to lead the department dedicated to ensuring equality, non-discrimination and ethics within and across the body of Commission staff. Furthermore, Oettinger had questionable interactions with lobbyists, in one case accepting a flight on a private jet of an unregistered lobbyist. On January 9, he will attend an EP hearing on his suitability for the position.
