People who don't pay their fines and don't know how to manage a debt repayment scheme will finally risk imprisonment due to default of payment. According to MP Nine Kooiman of the Socialist Party, prison time for debt is counterproductive: people lose their jobs and the state's detention costs are high. For health reasons, she'd like State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff stop imprisoning pregnant women. Dijkhoff doesn't want to exclude pregnant women from detention in advance because "in a general sense, a prison has to be suitable for pregnant women who have broken the law and have been sentenced."
