Denmark is the latest European country to pass a law banning face veils. The government recently outlawed wearing the burqa and niqab, worn by some Muslim women, in public. The law passed the Danish Parliament by a small margin: 75 in favor, 30 opposed, and 74 abstaining. The new rule comes into force in August, and those who break it could be fined 134 euros. However, the law does not ban headscarves, turbans or Jewish skull caps. Amnesty said the ban was neither “necessary nor proportionate” and accused Denmark of violating freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
