In a Romanian case, the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that government bodies are not authorized to exchange personal data without permission. Citizens must be informed beforehand. The judgment may have consequences for the Netherlands, as last year there was public debate about the exchange of data between police and the Tax Administration. The tax authorities received car license number details, which are gathered by the police, in order to find out, for example, whether leased cars are used for private use.
