The first hearing of the appeal against the judgment of first instance of the Operation Condor trial will take place on 12 April. The first judgment, in January 2017, ended with eight life sentences and 19 acquittals. The appeal was sought by lawyers of the condemned defendants, the Public Prosecutor’s office of Rome and the lawyers of the victims’ families, including Mario Angelelli and Arturo Salerni from Progetto Diritti. The acquittal of Jorge Néstor Tróccoli Fernández, member of the Uruguayan intelligence and the only one who was present at the trial, had been the most controversial.
