Austrian Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil has announced that the government is ready to send troops and armored vehicles to the Brenner Pass border area with Italy in an effort to stop migrants from entering Austria. He said four armored personnel carriers had already been deployed to the Tyrol region and 750 troops were on standby. In response, Italy's foreign ministry said it had summoned the Austrian ambassador to discuss the situation. Although Austria has border checks with Hungary and Slovenia, elsewhere it adheres to the EU's Schengen open borders system.
