    Position: Dutch Translator (Consultant) for the Civil Liberties Union for Europe
    Full or part-time: Part-time
    Payment: Per piece, on a per-word basis; fee negotiable
    Location: On-line work
    Start date: As soon as possible
    Application deadline: February 19, 2021

    The Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties) is looking for a Dutch translator, in a Consultant position. We are a young but ambitious Berlin-based European human rights organization, with the double identity of a network and an EU-level watchdog. We help our members, who are national-level human rights organizations, and as a watchdog we work on a range of civil liberties topics. Our headquarters are in Berlin, but we have a presence in Brussels.

    At the moment, we have 16 member organizations across the EU that work on national-level human rights issues. We work with these organizations to help their advocacy and communications work reach a broader audience across the EU. To help with this, Liberties provides translation services in 14 different European languages.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities of the Consultant

    Translate content requested by the Civil Liberties Union for Europe. Depending on the task, this may mean translating from English to Dutch or from Dutch to English. The quantity of work is highly variable and there may not be requested tasks in certain months, or for weeks at a time.

    Typically, the work will be to translate news-related human rights articles from our Dutch member, Nederlands Juristen Comité voor de Mensenrechten (NJCM), into English. Articles will generally be between 400 and 800 words, though this is a rough estimate and subject to change. The Consultant may also be requested to translate other material, such as infographics or video scripts.

    The Consultant shall be available to provide the services during business hours, and as requested by Liberties for the time that is necessary to provide the services. Although the work will be irregular, the Consultant is expected to react promptly to Liberties’ translation requests and deliver the content within two (2) working days. (The deadline may be extended for larger projects.) The Consultant is also expected to be available for comments, clarifications or other communications with NJCM, though Liberties will be the Consultant’s employer and primary contact point.

    Education / Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree from a four- or three-year college or university and one to two years of relevant experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
    • At least 1–2 years of experience in translating;
    • Native Dutch speaker;
    • Fluent in English;
    • NGO experience/interest in human rights preferred.

    Skills Required

    • Strong writing abilities;
    • Exceptional attention to detail;
    • Able to express complex, abstract ideas in a straightforward, accessible way;
    • Familiar with using content management systems;
    • Familiarity with using editorial style guides;
    • Able to work well in a fast-paced environment;
    • Knowledgeable and passionate about human rights issues preferred;
    • Excellent written, verbal, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills;
    • Excellent listening and communication skills with sensitivity to cultural communication differences.

    Compensation

    Compensation occurs at the end of each month for which there is work. Remuneration is on a per-word basis, including all the work done in that month. Per-word fee is negotiable. The Consultant is expected to deliver an invoice to Liberties at the close of the month.
