A febbraio il Senato Italiano aveva approvato il tanto discusso e atteso disegno di legge sulle unioni civili. Il Primo Ministro Matteo Renzi aveva in seguito chiesto la fiducia per velocizzare l'approvazione del disegno di legge, che ora è stato finalmente approvato (con 360 voti a favore e 193 contro). Il disegno di legge in sè ha molti limiti - in particolare non autorizza la stepchild adoption - ma questo è tuttavia un passo in avanti importante per l'Italia, che finora era l'unico paese in Europa a non prevedere alcun riconoscimento legale alle coppie omosessuali.
