Video Shows Police Brutality against a Migrant in Spanish Detention Center

A recently released video shows what has often been reported by detainees in migrant detention centers in Spain: that violence and police abuse is a reality.

by Rights International Spain

In recent years, many undocumented migrants placed in detention centers have reported to human rights organizations about the police brutality, abuses and racist insults against them. However, these victims are almost always deported before they can even declare before the court, and thus the cases are closed without having a judicial investigation and a review of what has been recorded by security cameras in the facilities. In fact, the UN has shared its concerns for the lack of investigations into cases of mistreatment reported by undocumented migrants deprived of liberty.

But this time, thanks to the work of the organization Fundación Acción Pro Derechos Humanos, a judge has decided to order the review of the videos obtained by the cameras in order to investigate one of these reports of abuses and police violence. The video, recorded inside the laundry room of a Spanish detention center, shows two police officers dressed as civilians and a migrant. One of the police officers appears to take the migrant by his neck and hit him at least once, and then both police officers take him out of the laundry room in handcuffs to drive him to the airport, where he will be deported.
