A crucial case that should bring clarity to the legality of watching pirate streams was heard last week by the European Court of Justice. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN and Spanish authorities argued that offering or watching pirate streams violates the EU Copyright Directive, but the European Commission argued that people who watch such streams aren't breaking any law. The main question that the court will try to answer is specific: Is selling pre-programmed media-players with links to pirate sources, through add-ons for example, permitted? A final verdict is expected in early 2017.
