Iceland was elected at the UN headquarters in New York to replace the United States of America on the United Nations Human Rights Council. In June, the US announced its withdrawal from the council. Iceland will hold the seat vacated by the US for the remainder of the current term, which ends in 2019. Iceland received 172 votes, significantly more than the minimum of 97 votes needed to get elected.
