A delegation of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) visited Italy from September 16 to 22 in order to assess the treatment and the conditions of detention of migrants, as well as the safeguards for their protection against torture and ill-treatment. The delegation visited various detention centers for migrants - such as those of Rome, Trapani, Pozzallo, Turin and Bari - and has already presented its preliminary findings to the Italian government. This was the SPT's first visit to Italy, after the country's much-awaited ratification of the OPCAT in 2012.
