The UK Home Office decided to double the immigration health surcharge, a charge that migrants have to pay to access healthcare, to £400 a year. The Home Office said that the sum will bring much-needed funds for the National Health Service (NHS). Those who have to pay for it include people who have been living in the UK since childhood. They say that the surcharge could contribute to a new Windrush scandal, a name given to last year’s political scandal where several long-term UK residents were wrongly deported, and lead people unable to pay to lose their status and become illegal immigrants.
