Roberto Saviano, an investigative journalist and best-selling author, recently denounced the conditions of Italian prisons in a moving editorial in the major newspaper La Repubblica. "If prisons really give the measure of how well a democracy is faring, then Italy is doing really badly," he writes, commenting on the striking photos taken by Valerio Bispuri in the Poggioreale prison. There is still very much to be done to truly humanize Italian prisons.
