According to the 2016 Corruption Perceptions Index from Transparency International, 85 percent of the world's citizens live in a country ruled by a corrupt government. The 2016 edition of the annual report scored only two countries 90 out of 100, and just 54 of the 176 countries (30 percent) scored better than 50. The average country score for the year is just 43, which indicates endemic corruption in a country's public sector. Denmark and New Zealand scored 90 to rank atop the index, and seven of the top ten countries are from Europe.
