Swiss voters have overwhelmingly supported a law on new surveillance powers for the country's intelligence agencies. Some 65.5 percent of voters agreed to the proposal, which allows the authorities to tap phones, snoop on email and use hidden cameras and bugs. Proponents say it would bring Switzerland in line with the security measures deployed by neighboring countries, but opponents are afraid that it will erode civil liberties and freedoms. The new surveillance law was passed last year but has not yet been enacted after opponents gathered enough signatures to force yesterday's referendum.
