The number of complaints from ultra-Catholic groups, backed by extreme right-wing parties, against actors, playwrights, photomontages, performances, processions, carnival performances and exhibitions has increased dramatically in Spain in recent years. These groups cite offences of public scorn (under article 525.1 of the Criminal Code) for offending the religious feelings of members of a religious denomination. These offences are punishable by eight to twelve months prison, and although most cases are shelved, their filing creates a deterrent effect. Read more here.
