The Central Council of Appeals ruled on July 27, 2017, that the UWV, the Dutch institution responsible for the distribution of benefits, unlawfully denied a self-employed women paid maternity leave. The court held that self-employed women still must be offered appropriate compensation, because they are entitled, based on the UN Women's Convention, to a form of maternity leave while retaining a (stable) income.
