A Pocket-Sized Guide Gives Migrants in Belgium the Info They Need

The Belgian League of Human Rights has published a pocket-sized guide for migrants that contains information about relevant state institutions, asylum procedures, education, housing and much more.

by David Morelli
Through its collaboration with different associations working in the field and through its experience in redirecting individual applications of migrants, the Belgian League of Human Rights (LDH) was able to observe a number of needs that are specific to the sector of migration.

Among the most important needs of migrants is the access to information regarding their rights.

For this reason, LDH decided to gather all the most important practical information for migrants into one pocket-sized guide and make it directly available for migrants. Its content includes the addresses of institutions, administrations and associations that are useful in the daily life situations of migrants in Belgium: residence permit, access to health care, professional training, education and school, housing, etc.

Two guides

Of course, the guide does not have the binding force of law and does not purport to cover that field. It contains basic information that should be complemented by advice from professionals whenever possible.

Another guide designed for professionals was published in September. Whether the professionals are specialized in the field of migration or not, this so-called comprehensive guide offers them a minimum information basis and helps them give directions to the applications that migrants ask assistance for. The guide is meant to complement the information tools that are already developed by our partner organizations specialized in issues related to the rights of foreigners.

Get your copy!

The guide can be downloaded in French and English on the LDH website. It is also available in hard copy in both languages, on request from the LDH secretariat: +32 2 209 62 80 - ldh@liguedh.be

The comprehensive guide for professionals (in French only) is available here.
