Polish President Andrzej Duda has said he will veto two controversial bills that threaten the independence of the judicial system. One of the bills would immediately end the terms of all Supreme Court justices and allow the government to select their replacements. The proposed amendments, which were passed by both houses of Parliament by the end of last week, sparked mass protests throughout Poland, as tens of thousands of citizens, supported by human rights groups like Liberties member HFHR, poured into the streets to register their dissatisfaction.
