The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights has reported a case to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women involving domestic violence against a woman and the state’s failure to protect her. From 2003-2006, HFHR's client repeatedly reported to the police that her husband abused her and her children and threatened to set fire to their house, but the police did not believe her. In 2006, the man carried out his threats and set fire to the house, dying on site. The client attempted to seek compensation from the Polish Treasury, but her action was dismissed.
