The Polish Parliament should reject legal amendments that would "encroach upon the independence of the judiciary," Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks wrote in a letter addressed to the Speaker of Sejm. He warned that changes to the Act on the National Council for the Judiciary would give Parliament the authority to select the judges who sit on the National Council for the Judiciary. Muižnieks said such a move would erode the separation of powers and giving the executive legislative branches immense sway over the judiciary.
