Some 1,100 African migrants stormed the border fence along the Spanish enclave of Ceuta early on New Year's Day, injuring fifty Moroccans and five Spanish border guards. The migrants were attempting to enter Spanish territory, but only two were successful in scaling the six-meter fence. Both needed hospital treatment, and one guard lost an eye, officials said. Each year, hundreds of African migrants living illegally in Morocco try to enter Ceuta and Melilla, Spain's other North African enclave, in hope of getting to Europe.
