European parliamentarians will vote this week on two reports about tightening the rules for using the General Expenditure Allowance, a part of their official expenditure, worth 50,000 euros annually. Last year a consortium of investigative journalists found widespread abuses, including rent payments to national political parties or to personal accounts. Nick Aiossa, from Transparency International, said, "The proposals are wholly inadequate and fail to bring any meaningful transparency to how MEPs are spending public money." Currently these expanses do not require any proof of spending.
