The Madrid City Council has rejected the request of a group of local police officers that asked to be supplied with tasers. In the words of the mayor, the use of these weapons is unnecessary and 'very damaging'. Rights International Spain welcomes this decision. The UN Committee against Torture urged Spain in one of its reports to 'consider abandoning the use of electric "Taser" weapons by the local police', as they are contrary to the Convention against Torture.
