The president of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, has submitted the Istanbul Convention to Parliament for ratification. Although Lithuania signed it in 2013, ratification kept being postponed for five years. Progress has so far been impeded by public myths – that ratifying the convention would necessitate changing the definition of gender and implementing "provisions on homosexuality." Grybauskaitė stressed that it was aimed at combating violence against women, with gender being discussed from a social perspective. She took these steps during the Women Political Leaders Summit in Vilnius.
