The draft law on the spelling of names in documents, registered in Lithuania, allows a person's name to be spelled using Latin-based letters in personal identity documents without changing it to fit its Lithuanian pronunciation. This change is very important to the Polish minority, ensuring the appropriate implementation of the right to a name. Unfortunately, it is opposed by the conservative party on the basis that it threatens the preservation of the Lithuanian language. Despite the urging of human rights experts, personal name spelling has been a markedly contested issue for some years.
