Judges in the Passage Process

The Amsterdam High Court on June 29 sentenced all four suspects in the so-called Passage Process, which involved gang murders, to life in prison. This ruling is striking. In April 2016, the Strasbourg court ruled in Murray v the Netherlands that the Dutch system violates Article 3 of the ECHR. It held that "A life sentence can remain compatible with Article 3 only if there is both a prospect of release and a possibility of review, both of which must exist from the imposition of the sentence." The Amsterdam court said that that ruling isn't an impediment to imposing a life sentence.
