The draft bill on citizenship for immigrants, based on 'jus soli' (Latin for 'law of the soil'), is set to be excluded from the parliamentary schedule for the remainder of the legislative term. The bill was promised by the ruling centre-left Democratic Party (PD), that has now realised that it cannot muster a majority behind it because of internal opposition in the government's coalition. Senator Luigi Manconi, who went on a hunger strike a few days ago to demand action on the bill, said that he and other supporters would continue to seek a vote before Parliament is dissolved for the election.
