After the recent record participation in the abortion referendum, the Irish government plans to hold another on changing its law against blasphemy. The government, as part of its program, made a commitment on the issue and wants to hold a referendum on the same day as the upcoming presidential election in the country to decide about the blasphemy law, which was added to the constitution in 1937. The previous government promised to change the blasphemy law after comedian and writer Stephen Fry was investigated under the law in 2015 for calling God stupid, selfish and "quite clearly a maniac."
