Iceland, Denmark and Austria are the most peaceful countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index 2016. Four other European states — Portugal, Czechia, Switzerland and Slovenia — are among the top 10, along with New Zealand, Japan and Canada. On the other end of the index are countries plagued by war and conflict: Syria, South Sudan and Iraq. Portugal, which completed the EU/IMF economic adjustment program in 2014, rose nine spots, to fifth. The index is compiled annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace.
