Mario D., an Italian man imprisoned in Florence, has been on a hunger strike for the last six months. He is protesting against the many transfers he has endured. "I am not a package," he said. He has been consuming almost only liquids for six months and has lost 30 kilos. He can no longer walk. The problem of multiple transfers is significant in the Italian penitentiary system. The law says that prisoners should serve their sentences close to home, but this rarely happens.
