Sweden is now the first country in the world to offer compensation to transgender people who were forced to undergo sterilization in order to be allowed to change their sex. Up until 2013, Swedish citizens had to accept sterilization before sex changes could be officially recognized by the state. Five years ago, a Stockholm court ruled that forced sterilizations was unconstitutional and violated European human rights law. The new law on compensation will come into force on 1 May. Some 600-700 people will be eligible and receive 225,000 kronor (22,000 euros) each.
