The governments of France and Germany propose rules that would weaken human rights safeguards in the European Union. The proposal would allow deportation of asylum seekers before their case is considered and includes an option to recognize regions instead of countries as fit for return. This option would come into force only in times of "mass influxes" of people towards the EU. Currently, the EU rules allow sending away economic migrants, but return countries must meet certain conditions before migrants are returned, and a person has the right to wait for their asylum decision in Europe.
