The French government had decided to set
the age of consent at 15, the minister for gender equality, Marlene
Schiappa, announced. French lawmakers aim to make sure that sex with someone
younger than 15 would be considered rape following the advice from doctors and
legal experts. Until now prosecutors needed to prove sex with someone under 15
was forced in order to bring rape charges. The amendment comes amid
uproar over two recent cases of men accused of having sex with 11-year-old
girls. Today, if there is no proof of violence or coercion, offenders may only be
charged with sexual abuse.
