A new immigration law that tightens the rules around asylum has been approved by the French National Assembly. With the new legislation, shorter asylum application deadlines will be introduced, the time for which illegal migrants can be detained is doubled to 90 days, and a one-year-long prison sentence is put in place for those entering France illegally. The law caused the first serious division within President Macron's La République en Marche party. Critics of the law, including human rights groups, say many measures – for example keeping children and families in detention – go too far.
