A new bill that massively expands surveillance powers has been passed in the UK. The Investigatory Powers Bill passed through the House of Lords yesterday and now needs only the Queen's approval, a formality known as royal assent, to become law. One of the most controversial powers included in the bill is the requirement for communications service providers like ISPs and mobile carriers to collect and store users' data for 12 months and provide government agencies access to this data. Civil liberties organizations have fought against the bill since it was first introduced over a year ago.
