The European Commission on 2 May announced plans to create a force of 10,000 border guards as part of its overall EU budget plan for the years 2021-2027. Although details are still scarce, the Commission wrote that the new force would be a "standing corps" - suggesting that the 10,000 guards would be established as a new force within Frontex, the EU's border security agency. The European Commissioner for budget, Gunther Oettinger, told MEPs that the proposal is "a very clear signal of the power of the EU to act."
