The European Commission (EC) on Monday gave the Polish government until late June to reach agreement with the EC in their dispute over the independence of Poland's courts. EC First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said negotiations had made progress but more needed to be done by Warsaw to convince the Commission that the rule of law was being respected in Poland. Timmermans said he needed to see "a few more
steps" by Warsaw before he could declare there is no longer a systemic threat to the rule of law. He said the next meeting with the government, on June 26, would be a make-or-break moment.
